Liam Mooney: Family of 16-year-old killed in Birmingham moped crash pay tribute to ‘caring’ teenager

The family of a 16-year-old boy who was killed after falling off a moped during an incident with a car in Birmingham say they are heartbroken by their loss.

Liam Mooney died in hospital on Tuesday after suffering serious head injuries in the incident the prior evening.

He is believed to have been a pillion passenger on a moped in Rocky Lane, Perry Barr, Birmingham, when he fell from the vehicle.

Police believe a silver car drove off after the incident – and they are now calling for the driver to come forward.

"Liam was a teenager and should have had his life in front of him," said Detective Inspector Adam Jobson of West Midlands Police.

"This is a devastating time for his family and they need answers about what happened on Monday night.

"We really need to speak to the car driver so they can tell us what went on and help us piece together the full circumstances.

"It’s imperative we hear their side of the story."

Releasing a statement through the police department, Liam’s family paid tribute to the teenager who they say was "a bit of a joker" and who had "a brilliant sense of humour".

"He was also so caring at times," the statement continued. "He had not long became a uncle and loved his niece so much.

"We are so heartbroken and never thought this would happen to us.

"Liam was not just loved by his mom, dad, sisters and brothers but his nans, grandads, aunties, uncles and cousins. He will be sadly missed by everyone.

"Fly high our beautiful little angel. We love you so much, sleep tight. We will all be together again one day."
