Ex-England boss Roy Hodgson joins government’s fan-led review of football

Football manager Roy Hodgson is joining the expert panel on the government’s fan-led review of the sport.

The announcement comes after the former England boss spent his last match in charge of Crystal Palace at their game against Liverpool on Sunday afternoon.

The government’s review was put together in the light of the now-failed European Super League, which saw six English top-flight teams attempt to form a breakaway league with six other continental clubs.

Football fans were among the most fierce critics of the plans, which would have seen Liverpool, Manchester City, Manchester United, Arsenal, Tottenham Hotspur and Chelsea take on top European sides in a competition worth billions in extra finances.

Conservative MP Tracey Crouch will chair the review, which gets under way on Monday, and will discuss the future of the sport with supporters of football clubs over the next few months.

On the involvement of the former England manager, Culture Secretary Oliver Dowden said: "I am delighted that Roy Hodgson has joined our expert panel to help shape the future of football.

"Roy has a wealth of experience and knowledge of the game, and has managed teams at the highest level across Europe.

"I know fans will be eager to share their views with him as a highly respected figure in the game."

The government is seeking views specifically around ownership of clubs, governance and financial flow within the game.

Fans will be asked what they would like to see changed, which will form a final report – expected in the autumn.

Other experts on the panel include the chief executive of the Football Supporters’ Association Kevin Miles, the chair of the FA Women’s Super League Dawn Airey and Godric Smith, the director of Cambridge United.

Ms Crouch said: "I am thrilled to have such a strong team with a wealth of experience across the whole ecosystem of football to help support the fan-led review.

"The fans will be at the heart of the review panel’s work and I look forward to kicking off the formal meetings with fan groups and others next week".
